Reflection..
I have always appreciated the beauty of words. The way in which humans express their desires, dreams, and emotions is primarily achieved through the medium of words. In order for me to feel happy and fulfilled, I knew my career would need to heavily involve words. However, I didn’t expect it to take on this unique form.
All my life I have been a writer, a storyteller. Whether it be in my diary or in my local newspaper, words were spilling out of me. Because of this, I was steered into the world of journalism. I enjoyed doing it and experienced great success. As I continued on my journey, I discovered that something about journalism just didn’t feel right anymore. The dark, suddenly emptying newsrooms paired with my desire to directly help people in need, led me away from the dog-eat-dog ways of journalism and into a more suitable career path for me: speech-language pathology.
After much research, deliberation, and prayer, it was officially my semester to try out this new career path. Speech pathology sustained me in the ways journalism could not. With this degree, I would be guaranteed a job after graduation, earn double the salary, work as much or as little as I desired, and could help people across the age spectrum.
Diving right into the subject matter, I was enthralled, challenged, and could immediately feel the magnitude of what I was learning, thinking of how I could use every bit of knowledge to help someone someday. I enjoyed hearing the professor’s stories of struggle and triumph, teaching with a true passion for the mission. Observing King David’s Kids, watching videos, and listening to guest speakers brought the disorders to life and I was able to better understand what my future could consist of.
Instead of only writing my words on paper, I am going to help people learn how to better use their own words to communicate. I can think of nothing more thrilling than helping someone realize, regain, and use their speech to its fullest potential. I thoroughly enjoyed this semester’s course and I am excited to see what comes next!
